A Petition to Protect Bahamian Opportunity in the Real Estate Profession
This petition calls for a review and amendment of the legislation governing real estate professionals in The Bahamas so that the profession of real estate salesmen and brokers is reserved for Bahamian citizens.
Your support helps strengthen opportunity, accountability, and fairness in the Bahamian real estate profession.
The real estate industry in The Bahamas is directly connected to one of our nation’s most valuable resources: Bahamian land. The marketing, representation, and sale of property influences our economy, our communities, and the long term future of Bahamian ownership and development.
Many Bahamians believe that the profession responsible for representing and selling Bahamian property should primarily provide opportunity to Bahamian citizens.
This petition respectfully calls for a review and amendment of the legislation governing real estate professionals in The Bahamas so that the profession of real estate salesmen and brokers is reserved for Bahamian citizens.
Any unauthorized or illegal sale of Bahamian property should be investigated and stopped immediately to protect both the integrity of the profession and the interests of the country.
Under the Real Estate (Brokers and Salesmen) Act, individuals who are permanent residents with the right to work may currently obtain licensing as real estate salesmen.
Many Bahamians believe that professions directly tied to the sale and transfer of Bahamian land should remain a profession reserved for Bahamian citizens.
There are also ongoing concerns within the industry that, in some cases, properties in The Bahamas are allegedly being marketed or sold by foreign individuals who are not licensed in The Bahamas and who may not even be citizens or residents of the country.
If such activities are occurring, this raises serious concerns for the real estate industry and the national economy.
Loss of legitimate commissions for legally licensed Bahamian realtors
Loss of VAT revenue that should be collected by the Government of The Bahamas
Reduced oversight and accountability within the real estate sector
We respectfully petition the Government of The Bahamas and the Bahamas Real Estate Association to review and amend the relevant provisions of the Real Estate (Brokers and Salesmen) Act to establish the following:
To ensure fairness and stability within the industry, current licensed members who are not Bahamian citizens may be allowed to renew their existing licenses under a transitional period. However, once the amended law or act comes into effect, no new licenses should be issued to permanent residents or non citizens moving forward. Permanent residents who wish to continue building long term careers in the real estate profession are encouraged to pursue Bahamian citizenship.
This petition advances fairness, opportunity, and accountability for all Bahamians.
Protect employment opportunities for Bahamian citizens
Encourage long term residents to fully integrate into Bahamian society through citizenship
Ensure Bahamians remain at the forefront of representing and selling Bahamian property
Strengthen oversight and accountability in the industry
Prevent illegal or unlicensed real estate transactions that undermine the profession
Help ensure that earnings generated from Bahamian land remain invested within The Bahamas rather than leaving the country
